I found this refreshing because, typically, the only anime you are likely to find set in present-time reality are slice-of-life, revolving around dramatic or romantic themes. Although its depiction of battle features the usual problems of character shielding and the Stormtrooper effect, overall the show is very much grounded in reality, with no magic or science-fiction elements whatsoever. Typical action bases you could expect from hollywood, but which, for one reason or another, anime rarely delivers. From its premise to its execution, the show provides thrilling action sequences, from boat and car chases, to messy fisticuffs and bullet-spamming gunfights, the show covers all

Generally, I tend to avoid those anime which are blatantly action-oriented, because an action anime series so often means that it will be generically shounen, or be some kind of absurd mecha-combat series very rarely can I find an action series which does not fall to those and other traps, and Black Lagoon is one of them. One word that keeps propelling itself to the forefront of my head when I go to describe this show is: ‘refreshing’. Witness Rokurou struggling to keep his values and philosophies intact as he slowly transforms from businessman to ruthless mercenary. In order to survive, he must quickly adapt to his new environment and prepare himself for the bloodshed and tribulation to come.Ī non-stop, high-octane thriller, Black Lagoon delves into the depths of human morality and virtue. Now abandoned and betrayed by his former employer, Rokurou decides to join Black Lagoon. The group plans to use him as a bargaining chip in negotiations which ultimately failed. His business trip swiftly goes downhill as Rokurou is captured by a mercenary group operating in Roanapur, called Black Lagoon. A haven for convicts and degenerates alike, the city is notorious for being the center of illegal activities and operations, often fueled by local crime syndicates.Įnter Rokurou Okajima, an average Japanese businessman who has been living a dull and monotonous life, when he finally gets his chance for a change of pace with a delivery trip to Southeast Asia. Keep on blowing things up.Within Thailand is Roanapur, a depraved, crime-ridden city where not even the authorities or churches are untouched by the claws of corruption. Keep on blowing things up, Lagoon Company.
We need her to remind us that excess is the key, because the understated violence of real life is just too much for us. It is, therefore, a godsend that Levi can jump from ship to ship on the ocean, blowing people up all over the place without suffering a scratch. The show is, without doubt, a more tasteful look at this sort of subject matter than the Hollywood movies of the late eighties and early nineties that it emulates the ruined Buddha is so metaphorical for the whole idea of this show I can’t even begin. We’re not broken for enjoying this, although perhaps Chin’s fate was taking it too far.

If you consider the reality of piracy too heavily, this show can’t be fun at all because these characters are shipping heroin, explosives and generally creating havoc in the free world. Some episodes can be broken down to key ideas, and this one is Rock’s thought about Levi’s skills: “While I said that, I thought to myself ‘what must have happened to her to break her in such a way? How broken am I that I praise her for it?'”. Rock is unimportant for once, as we watch Dutch negotiate his way around the city and Levi explain that she has always been a pirate: stealing, killing and doing “other bad things” since she was a child. Due to Dutch’s links with Balalaika, the Lagoon company are remarkably unpopular with all of the local crime lords, and one is stupid enough to take them on.
The Lagoon company have no jobs, so they temporarily retire to their ground base in the port city of Anbapara. The world of pirates is a world that is far dirtier outside of the context of the Black Lagoon crew. This episode displays many kinds of sadism, and it berates itself for doing so.
